HAM - Amateur Radio

I earned my Technician License in February 2018, initially assigned the callsign KG5YFZ. Later, I secured a vanity call sign, now K2SMT.

Currently, I spend most of my time "lurking" and listening to Oklahoma City frequencies on 2 meters and 70cm (VHF/UHF) bands. As a member of the South Canadian Amateur Radio Society, I appreciate its unique name, which stems from the Canadian River that runs near Norman – not because we're in Canada!

In addition to my primary activities, I occasionally dabble with DMR, listening to Talk Groups 91 and 93.

My radio collection includes an Icom 5100D in my Nissan Titan, a Vero VR-N7500 in the workshop, a TYT MD2017 for DMR, and the obligatory Baofeng UV-5X3. Recently, I added two TYT 9800 radios, which are quad-band radios covering 10 meters, 6 meters, 2 meters, and 70cm. As a Technician-level operator, I have voice privileges on 6, 2, and 70cm frequencies. The 9800 radio only supports FM mode, so the 6-meter band is largely limited to local repeater use.

As my interest in amateur radio grows, I plan to add more equipment and, eventually, pursue my General license. Unfortunately, COVID-19 disrupted the General Class schedule in 2020, and I've yet to catch up with the 2022 class.
